I've enjoyed Debbie Ohi's Blatherings
for years now. Anyone can debate about the merits and motivations for
creating an online journal, but I've come to realize that they can reinforce
in a very intimate way just how much we all have in common despite how
different we all are. |

Thursday June 21 , 2001 Why Website? I've started trying to pull this website together. The ostensible reason is to create a portfolio online, since it seems to be expected these days. But the more I figure out of how I want it to go together, the more I realize it's really for me. The Sketchbook portion actually kept me awake last night (or maybe it was that caffiene). But I got excited about it and ideas kept popping into my brain about things I could do with it. And now, under the cold light of day, it still seems pretty cool. Unusual for my 3 a.m. ideas. That loud negative part of my brain has decided that it's probably only interesting to myself, and will be self-indulgent and egotistical as an ongoing record of my knowledge gained over the years. But then I said to myself, well hell, the whole damn site is self-indulgent and egotistical. It's a portfolio site. Portfolios are to convince the world what a great artist you are. Most personal web sites are more for the person putting them out there than for the potential viewers, right? So I'm going to indulge myself. And if anyone else happens to find anything interesting in it, that's gravy. So I'll be working on this in spare moments between baby care, on the usual 3 to 5 hours of sleep I seem to be getting these days. Maybe later it'll all seem like a bad sleep-deprived dream.. |
